CASE STUDY: everyday sexism

1)Laura Bates created the 'Everyday Sexism' project in order to speak out about sexual harassment and to destroy the normalisation of it.
2)This project links to post-feminism as it trys to encourage gender equality. Although women's rights have become more significant, they aren't as strong as men's rights. Feminism is necessary in today's society as women are sexually exploited on a daily basis and society often normalises it.
3)Technology was essential to the success of this project as it made it easy to spread the word by sharing and the use of hashtags.
4)I believe that the Everyday Sexism project will be required for a while in the future as sexual exploitation has been normalised therefore, we may not be able to change other peoples views and opinions.

MEDIA MAGAZINE: the fourth wave?
1)Networked feminism is when it is divided into 'waves'; they explain the different contexts behind them culturally. It started when feminism came about. Feminism started as they were considered as inferior to men in society- its is still an issue today however, it isn't as bad.
2)The first wave of feminism began in the 19th century and ended in the early years of the 20th century- it focussed on suffrage (the right to vote/ political rights). The second wave of feminism started in the 1960s- this focussed on equal rights and pay. The third wave of feminism started during the 1990s and still exists today. The fourth wave hopes to tackle social equality issues. In my opinion, we are actually in the fourth wave as we are trying to ensure equality in society as an entirety.
3)Laura Bates created the 'Every day sexism project' in order to face today's feminist issues. Its main focus is how men feel that they are allowed to sexualise women. The project intends to spread awareness that women still come across with societal issues despite the evolution in rights for women. It enables women to protest and speak out about their treatment received from men. It should spread a message to all men that women must be respected as people and not objects; furthermore, they have to be treated equally. Emma Watson led a campaign called 'He for she'. It focusses on male support for gender equality. It is online; this enables people can get involved on social media. This campaign is not against men, it is one hundred percent about ensuring gender equality- this goes against traditional feminism. It has been criticised to be too focussed on men which automatically goes back on the fact that women are now 'strong' and 'independent' and therefore, they shouldn't have to rely on men. It could be seen that this makes women seem like they are going backwards regarding feminism; women need to rely on men and get things done. FCKH8 focusses on the representation of girls today and the fact that they still face inequalities. 'This girl campaign' is a fitness campaign for women that doesn't shame any women. They share images of women who don't have the typical bodies that some women desire; they do this without body shaming. It has been criticised a lot by feminist activists. The online petition 'stop taxing periods', try's to abolish the taxation of female sanitary products as they believe that these type of products aren't a luxury, they're a necessity.
4)I agree with the fourth wave feminism. In society, we are now exposed to the fact that women are constantly suffering from issues.

Wider reading: 1. In the 1960s, advertising techniques were shown in a time of new and improved way to advertise. Back then, advertising agencies focused on the creativity when planning their campaigns. Score reflects that change as it focuses more on gender roles and sexuality more than it focuses on the product itself. It is significant as the advert symbolises how women were; it objectified the women because they are admiring the male while they carry him- this signifies the fact that men are dominant. 2. During the post war period, campaigns included the idea that women should stick to being housewives. 3. The props that are used in this advert reinforce the idea of gender roles. For example, the only male is holding a gun; this could assert his masculinity and automatically give him all of the power.
